Thursday brought a powerful close to our graduation session as the Local Government Leadership Program Class of 2026 came together for a full day of growth, reflection, and connection.

As we gathered at the Pecos River Village Conference Center, there was a quiet understanding across the room: this was one of our last full days together as the Local Government Leadership Program Class of 2026. What followed was a day full of movement, reflection, and connection led by Phil Bryson, and as many know, there’s something truly special about the way Phil creates space for people to show up fully.

Over the course of the day, stories were shared. There was laughter, there were challenges, and there were moments that pushed each person just a little further outside their comfort zone. But more than anything, there was trust.

In just two sessions, this class became something more than a cohort. They became a team. The kind of team that listens deeply, shows up honestly, and supports each other without hesitation.

That evening, we gathered at the Carlsbad Country Club to celebrate what they had accomplished. The graduation ceremony was a moment filled with pride, vulnerability, and a quiet “happy sad” feeling that comes when you know something meaningful is coming to a close.

While the program may be ending, the relationships built here are not. This team showed what leadership really looks like: being open, being present, and being willing to grow together.

Stay tuned over the next few weeks as we have the honor of spotlighting each of our LGLP graduates individually.

Wednesday was just as busy as we continued our graduation session with the Local Government Leadership Program Class of 2026 in Carlsbad, centered on learning, leadership, and connection across key systems that shape New Mexico.

We started the day with a self-guided tour of the incredible Carlsbad Caverns National Park, setting the tone with one of the most iconic natural landmarks in our state.

From there, we traveled to the Eddy County Fire & Rescue Service Complex, where we shared lunch and began a powerful series of conversations on education. We first heard from Dr. Gerry Washburn, Superintendent of Carlsbad Municipal Schools, who provided insight into K–12 education in the region, current priorities, and the evolving needs of students and educators.

We then shifted to higher education in southeast New Mexico with Dr. Kevin Beardmore, President of Southeast New Mexico College, discussing workforce development, access to education, and the future of post-secondary pathways in our communities.

In the afternoon, we learned about the U.S. Department of Energy’s WIPP - Waste Isolation Pilot Plant Program, operating right here in Eddy County, and its critical role in national operations and safety infrastructure.

We then heard directly from Chief Joshua Mack, Eddy County Fire & Rescue Chief, about the realities, demands, and importance of fire and rescue services in New Mexico. Following that, we toured the Eddy County Fire Rescue training complex to see firsthand the preparation and commitment behind emergency response.

To close out the day, we hosted an incredible Community Reception at The Golf Society, graciously sponsored by Western Commerce Bank. A sincere thank you to Western Commerce Bank for their generous support and partnership in making this gathering possible and helping bring together local leaders, partners, and our LGLP cohort for meaningful connection and conversation.

A full day of learning, leadership, and community. Stay tuned as we continue sharing highlights from an impactful week in Carlsbad!

It’s been a busy (and impactful) week for our team down in Carlsbad as we wrapped up the graduation session for our Local Government Leadership Program Class of 2026. What a way to kick things off!

We started the week at Chevron, who generously opened their doors to our class and the local community for a deep dive into oil & gas in the Permian Basin. From “Oil & Gas 101” to the macroeconomics driving New Mexico’s economy (and the future of lower carbon operations), this was a day full of meaningful learning and honest conversation.

We were honored to hear from leaders shaping the region, including the City of Carlsbad Mayor Rick Lopez and Eddy County Manager Mike Gallagher, alongside industry experts who shared insights on community investment, economic impact, and the evolving energy landscape.

We also explored sustainability and public-private partnerships, wrapping the day with a thought-provoking session from Waste Management WM on recycling realities and collaboration in action.

And after a full day of learning, we closed things out the best way we know how - with connection and community at Nurvis Purvis Brewing Co.

This week is a powerful reminder of what leadership looks like in New Mexico: showing up, engaging in complex conversations, and building relationships that move our communities forward.

Stay tuned over the next few days as we share highlights and key moments from an impactful week in Carlsbad! 👀
