Meet Chilean-American composer, Javier Farías!

Farías is the recipient of numerous international composition awards. His catalog spans a wide range of formats, from solo guitar and full guitar ensembles to chamber music, choral works, and large-scale orchestral compositions. His music has been premiered and recorded by renowned artists and performed in acclaimed venues throughout the world. Come to our concert, "Light Upon the Water," on April 26th, and experience the New Mexico premiere of "Oceana" or "Cadera de las Islas," by Javier Farías. This contemporary chamber work for chorus, guitar, viola, and charango sets the poetry of Pablo Neruda to music, evoking the vastness and beauty of the sea. The piece draws on Neruda’s language to create a richly textured, atmospheric sound world.

The first half of the concert will include works by Ellingboe, Lauridsen, Stroope, and others which immerse the listener in themes of light, darkness, and water.

The charango is a small Andean instrument in the lute family, widely used throughout South America since the introduction of stringed instruments by the Spanish during colonization. Though wood is commonly used in modern instruments, the charango was traditionally made from the shell of an armadillo!

The charango is featured prominently in Javier Farías's "Oceana." Don't miss the New Mexico premiere of this important contemporary work at our next concert on April 26th!! Buy your tickets today at abqcorolux.org/events.
