NM, and especially Albuquerque, is in mourning for the passing of a great doctor, and a greater man.
Our condolences go out to Dr. Clayton's family as we all gather today to remember the impact he has had on so many children's lives.
His obituary is included in the comments.
The latest research into child development says punishing is detrimental to a child's health.
Rewarding positive behavior and utilizing positive reinforcement is key to healthy children, and later healthy adults.
There is also healthy positive reinforcement that helps a child develop intrinsic motivation, and unhealthy rewards.
When children clean, or "come clean", the best positive reinforcement is actually to ask them (to close their eyes if they are younger and then ask) "how do you feel now? How does your tummy feel? Your heart? Your throat? I want you to make choices so you can feel this good all the time!"
If they have cleaned a room, and haven't done the best job yet, tell them you can already see a difference, followed with "is there anything in here (or pick a specific location if there is still a lot to improve. ..like the bed) that you think you could do even better?"
Once they have improved it, ask them how they feel (see above). If there are more sections that need to be improved, repeat the process in *each* section.
You will be amazed at how quickly this works!
You will be more amazed at how much easier they are to talk to, and how much more pleasant the "terrible twos" and teens become (developmentally, there is almost no difference between teen thinking and two year old thinking, as the brain is taking itself apart and pruning neurons at both ages).
