UNM Optical Science and Engineering Program Established in the mid 1980's, the Optics Program at UNM has acquired a national and international reputation.

More than 60 students have graduated and found employment in industry, academia, and research laboratories. Pioneering research has originated from this program in areas ranging from the quantum theory of lasers to ultrashort pulse physics to optoelectronic devices, to cite only a few examples. Prof. Luke Lester named the SPIE 2012 Harold E. Edgerton award winner! Congrats to the department Chair Prof. Luke Lester on winning the 2012 Harold E. Edgerton award. This Award is presented annually by SPIE for outstanding contributions to optical or photonic techniques in the application and understanding of high speed physical phenomena.

Prof. Majeed Hayat named SPIE Fellow Professor Majeed Hayat was elected a Fellow of the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE) on Dec. 15, 2012. This honor was given to Dr. Hayat for his "pioneering work in modeling and understanding impact ionization and noise in avalanche-photodiode devices well as seminal contributions to image processing for reducing noise in infrared focal-plane arrays.” Dr. Hayat received his recognition and plaque at the Photonics West Fellows Luncheon (Monday 23 January 2012 in San Francisco, CA).
