Last week was a busy one…

Thursday was NM MESA Day at the Legislature. Big thanks to Minority Leader Armstrong and Representative Anita Gonzales the sponsor of the Memorial, House Speaker Martinez for hosting on the House floor, the Gov staff for their time, Senator Campos who sponsored on the Senate side and to all the other many legislators and champions that took time to welcome and visit with the students.

Earlier in the school year, Belen and Infinity High School MESA students participated in a fall rally event at the beautiful Barelas Community Center in Albuquerque. Students built a crane, practiced their dexterity, and created a STEAM art piece to take back to campus.

In the spring, Belen High School campus hosted the Be Proud Be Pro Career Technical Education trailer, students got to engage with a variety of STEM education related career tools and resources.

This educational partnership was provided in collaboration with The Encantado Foundation.

Congratulations to our teams that both placed 3rd Overall at the 2024 National Engineering Design Competition. We are so proud of both of our teams.

High School Students from across the state were invited to participate in a 2-week Summer Field Experience hosted by the Conservation Science Center at NMHU, NM MESA, and NMFWRI. Students have the opportunity to immerse in field work across Northern New Mexico including forest management, forest ecology, fire ecology, soil science, aquatic ecology, grasslands management, forest restoration, GIS mapping and more. Thank you to all the partner agencies and volunteers that make this program a success.

Yesterday, students and chaperones rafted the Taos Racecourse as part of the program. A beautiful day to explore in great company.

NM MESA Guenther Advisor Achievement Award – Accepting 2023-2024 Nominations - Nominations Due May 31.

Calling all students, parents, administrators, teachers, community members — Let’s think about those great NM MESA advisors from this past school year who continuously gave of their time, passion, caring and expertise to ensure that students received a world class experience while in New Mexico MESA!

NM MESA is now receiving nominations for the Dr. Arthur H. and Joan Guenther Advisor Achievement Award. Advisors can be nominated by anyone who has seen their great work in action. The nomination deadline is Friday, May 31, 2024.

Selection will begin with the review of the nominating form and advisor/school activities that were completed, and will culminate with the award being presented to two nominees, as selected by the evaluation committee. The selected advisors and their schools will be recognized formally and publicly by NM MESA as recipients of the award. Advisors will receive a cash award of $100 from NM MESA.

About the Award
Dr. Arthur H. Guenther loved science… He loved education… He created New Mexico MESA in 1982. As a research professor of electrical and computer engineering, professor of physics and astronomy at UNM, and Chief Scientist at the Air Force Research Laboratory, he was an advisor and mentor to hundreds of graduate students, and advisor to the Governor of New Mexico. He wanted to influence the lives of high school students in New Mexico who were interested in a bright future in STEM careers, so he worked with university representatives and state and federal government officials to bring the MESA program to New Mexico. He subsequently spent many years working as a MESA Board Member and Board Member Emeritus. His wife, Joan Guenther supported MESA in countless ways over the many years she was involved and played an important role in the success of the organization and its staff.
NM MESA has established the Dr. Arthur H. and Joan Guenther Advisor Achievement Award with the expressed goal of honoring the legacy of Dr. Guenther and his wife, while simultaneously recognizing the wonderful and important work done by MESA advisors who perpetuate Dr. Guenther’s vision each year.
