Working Classroom

“Creative Currents” led by Eric J Garcia. Creative Currents is on the south wall of Working Classroom’s building. This mural was in honor of our relocation to and purchase of our building in Barelas. Sponsored by the Albuquerque Community Foundation, the FUNd at ACF, PNM and the National Museum of Mexican Art. Alejandra Carmona was the project leader and Rosie Thunderchief was the Mural Assistant alongside Eric. 5 youth apprentices assisted - Quela Bruch, Natalie Cruz, Aron Kruchoski, Lizbeth Miscles, and Adrianna Ortiz.Pictured is a river flowing from one end of a mural to the other. On the river is a person in a boat giving away a stack of books. The end of the river is reaching up in a hand crushing a fighter jet dropping bombs. This signifies the importance of education over war and profit. The border along the bottom is covered with shadows of various plants with an indigenous style motif representing the land that we are on.

Join Working Classroom for some poetry zine making at the Saturday from 1-2:15

This March Working Classroom highlights the mural, “ Crossroads Connections” by Al’Nair Lara. This mural was a collaborative featuring local artists like Angel Pavia and Adrianna Ortiz. Created in October 2018, the idea of represented togetherness and connection. You can observe the silhouettes of people riding their bikes. Inside the silhouettes are significant things that represent Barelas culture and history. The depictions include the railroad which attracted many to this neighborhood in Albuquerque’s early years. The mural also includes local plants, vegetables and the Guadalupe showing cultural representation. If you are curious to visit, it is located on the corner of 2nd street and Hazeldine. Fun fact : This mural was featured in a music video “Vuelo” by Santa Fe Klan.”

We encourage you to support an incredible community leader - Ernest “Mr. Mack” McMillan. In the handful of years he has made Albuquerque his home, he made a major impact sharing stories of his life as a Civil Justice activist, performing artist, writer and educator. Working Classroom Youth Arts Leaders have had the opportunity to learn about creating their vision as leaders through his mentorship. Our organization would also not be the same without the impact his daughter, Dafina, has had as a consultant - a legacy of creative service that continues across the country and beyond to future ancestors.
