If there is a day that we look forward to on the other 364 of each trip around the sun, it's the one each year when we take Larry Drew's family and consumer science classes at Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School out to our garden to touch and taste and walk around where we have spent the summer pleading with plants to grow for us. The students are always a delight. And Larry, face down and hands on a knife here, embraces the unpredictable moments with gusto!

Formal curriculum with clearly stated learning objectives by the 42-minute increment probably has its place in mainstream kindergarten-through-12th-grade education. We would submit, however, that many schools would do themselves a big favor by getting students outside and getting their hands dirty with activities that foster trusting relationships between those kids and the authority figures.

Not every single student liked every single thing they tasted on Friday as about 80 of them explored the available opportunities at our Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School garden. And that's okay. Kids drank up sunshine, breathed fresh air, got out of their comfort zones, took chances and maybe, if they were listening, learned a bit about a few unfamiliar vegetables.

And so the 17th year-long season of after-school Garden Club at Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School got rolling on Tuesday. We could have done a hundred different things better, executed on with more precision or more intentionality. But the students seemed happy. Some gentle and informal teaching and learning happened. And perhaps most of all, kids got outside and got their hands dirty.

Mountains of research links wellbeing to exposure to nature. And that exposure to nature certainly is not distributed equitably. So, we believe that our work is important.

We started preparing for this day on June 24, or whatever the last day of school was, planting and caring for soil and watering and harvesting garlic planted last fall and more. We work on Mother Nature's schedule, not the institutional calendar. Because it is important.

Capital Region educators, education leaders and other interested community members: You are invited to the inaugural Teaching in the Garden Workshop at Siena University on Saturday, Oct. 3!
Learn about nuts and bolts issues such as garden maintenance and community/family engagement, emerging trends like farm to table programming and pulling it all together with outdoor and place-based education curriculum.

The workshop, a collaboration of Siena, the Schenectady City School District's Farm to School Project and the Vegetable Project, will be on the Siena campus in Loudonville from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. with breakfast and lunch provided. Six continuing teaching and leadership education credits will be offered to interested attendees.
