Tim Miller, PreK-12 Education Advocate Tim is a Board Member for Ohio Excels These are among Akron’s many accomplishments during his tenure as a school board member.

Tim is a Board member for Ohio Excels, a nonpartisan coalition of business leaders committed to helping improve education for every student. Founded by Ohio’s business community, Ohio Excels has succeeded in bringing business groups a “united focus” on education issues. Tim was appointed to the State Board of Education by Governor DeWine on Jan. 8, 2021, to complete the last two years of a four-ye

ar term ending 12-31-2022. Tim served as Vice Chair of the Emerging Issues and Operational Standards Committee, was a member of the Budget Committee, a member of the Teaching Leading and Learning Committee, a member of the EMIS Committee, and was part of the Business Partnership Strategies workgroup. Tim served two four-year terms on the Akron Public Schools Board of Education, serving two years as vice president and seven years as co-chair of the Finance Committee. During Tim’s time on the Akron School Board, College and Career Academies (with more than 300 and counting business partnerships) was created and implemented across all high schools, with every single student participating, The LeBron James Family Foundation’s I Promise School was created and opened, one-to-one technology for students in Akron was implemented, and the district was able to stay off the ballot asking for new levy money dating back to 2012 due in part to his financial stewardship. Tim is an Akron Public Schools graduate and graduated from The University of Akron’s College of Business Administration with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration/Finance degree. Tim is the owner/agent of Insurance Service Agency Inc., a Trusted Choice® Independent Insurance Agency located in Akron. He is an active member of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) Ohio, having served on the State Leadership Council, currently serving as vice chair of the NFIB Akron Area Action Council. He is president of the Cascade Locks Park Association and past president of the Friends of the Akron School for the Arts. He is a graduate of Leadership Akron Signature Class 35. He also is active in several other trade associations and nonprofit organizations in Northeast Ohio. Tim lives in Akron with his wife Katy, has three adult children and two grandchildren. When relaxing, he enjoys Ohio history, Akron history, Canal history, exploring the Ohio-Erie Canal Towpath Trail, camping and traveling.

Akron Beacon-Journal - School districts across the region and nationwide have been facing a war of words — or, more accurately, a war over how to teach kids to read words. In recent years, a growing number of education experts have been advocating a shift away from a kind of reading curriculum known as "balanced literacy" toward a structured and phonics-based "science of reading." Gov. Mike DeWine is now urging every school district in Ohio to switch to science of reading curriculum, if they haven't already.

Here's a quick primer on the terms used to explain the different approaches used to teach young students how to read.

I was honored to sit with the Governor at an Ohio Excels breakfast this morning. When he took the podium, he announced that he would be signing an executive order directing a statewide audit be performed to find out who is teaching what literacy methods. We also heard from the former Superintendent of Mississippi and how that state moved the needle on literacy through the science of reading.
