feeling a hot take tonight 🫣 — yall. I am NOT a graphic novel hater. I actually love how they engage young readers, especially resistant readers. They have the ability engage readers with their fun and bright designs, bold text, and fun plots. BUT, when I’m teaching classic reading skills— comprehension strategies, text structure, stamina within basic text, pacing and sequencing within longer texts, etc. 🤝
Graphic novels hold power & deserve a seat at the table, but so do chapter books. I love when kids read for enjoyment (any reading is great, when it’s done for enjoyment!) but, sometimes I think we forget that chapter book reading teaches us essential skills (aka stamina without extreme stimulation!) 🫣
