The Transportation Element was developed to support the Airway Heights Comprehensive Plan update and to address the City's motorized and non-motorized transportation needs. It identifies forecast-year 2046 travel demand and recommends roadway, intersection, and pedestrian and bicycle improvements needed to accommodate multimodal travel gains.

It also summarizes the multimodal and environmental performance measures, goals, and policies recommended to support forecast transportation conditions. https://tinyurl.com/mw7m8bzj

Ziply Communications is, and will be throughout the remainder of the year, working in Airway Heights to install upgrades to its fiber-optic cable system.

What you might notice in your area-

Crews inspecting and surveying, marking & putting paint marks on the ground for locating utilities.

The work includes placing fiber underground and on utility poles.

Each location required a permit issued by the City’s Public Works Department, including an approved Traffic Control Plan. These plans are put in place to ensure the safety of the work crews and the public. Depending on the location, there may be sidewalk closed signs and detour routes

All work will be performed in existing utility easements and/or within public right-of-way. It will be performed in stages with the contractor(s) moving around the City from location to location. All work will be inspected by City staff, and all areas disturbed by construction activities will be restored before each permit is made final.

For questions or comments, please contact the City of Airway Heights Public Works Department at [email protected]

Ziply's is hanging door hangers. Our permits require 72 hours' notice to affected residences and businesses.

This Labor Day, we recognize the hardworking men and women whose dedication, service, and sacrifice help make our community stronger every day.

At the City of Airway Heights, we believe some of the most important work we do begins with family—supporting our own, caring for one another, and standing beside the community we are honored to serve.

To our officers, firefighters, professional staff, public safety partners, City employees, and especially the families who support those who serve: thank you. Your commitment and sacrifice do not go unnoticed.

We are proud to serve Airway Heights, proud of the partnerships that bring us together, and grateful for a community that continues to support one another.

Enjoy a safe and meaningful Labor Day with the people who matter most.

One Team. One Community. One Family.

Together We Rise.

Housing: The purpose of the housing chapter is to identify and support the provision of housing in Airway Heights by type, location, and quantity to meet projected needs.

Of course, housing offers more than the simple provision of shelter. Attractive, affordable, suitable, and safe housing is a vital ingredient to the success of any community.

Accordingly, a key objective for Airway Heights is to support the provision of housing as coordinated with a broad range of goals and policies unique to the city, in addition to those required by the Growth Management Act. These housing-related goals and policies are provided at the end of this chapter, showing how the City intends to meet its requirements and advance its long-term vision.

Airway Heights has a mix of residential, commercial, industrial, public, and open space uses within a compact area centered along Highway 2.

The City’s land use plan is also heavily influenced by its proximity to Fairchild Air Force Base and the Spokane International Airport, with land south of Highway 2 generally restricted from residential development.

The land usage, population forecasts, and land quantity were updated as part of the comprehensive plan development.

What is a comprehensive plan?

It’s the community's “big picture” plan. The Comprehensive Plan is a guide for how Airway Heights will grow in the future, setting priorities for housing, parks, roads, businesses, and more. More importantly, the plan gives residents the opportunity to voice their ideas and discuss the challenges and opportunities that shape their community.

Heather Trautman Named Acting City Manager of Airway Heights

City Manager Albert Tripp has appointed Heather Trautman, the City's Building and Planning Director, to serve as Acting City Manager effective August 20. Ms. Trautman will serve as Acting City Manager while City Manager Albert Tripp is on administrative leave.

Trautman has served the City of Airway Heights since 2019, most recently as Building and Planning Director, where she has led major initiatives including transportation grant applications that led to over 13 million dollars of funding from State and Federal agencies, the City's first online permitting portal for residential permits, and the implementation of the City's Geographic Information System Program.

During her tenure at the City of Airway Heights, Ms. Trautman oversaw several award-winning projects, the 2023 Comprehensive Plan and the Downtown Subarea Plan, both of which won the Governor's Smart Communities Award. Prior to her time at Airway Heights, Ms. Trautman spent 24 years at the City of Spokane, serving as Director of Neighborhood Services; Interim Director of Neighborhoods, Housing and Human Services Division; and Interim Director of Planning. In her role as Acting City Manager of Airway Heights, Ms. Trautman will oversee day-to-day City operations, including budgeting, departmental administration, and coordination with City Council.

"I remain committed to a simple but important principle: serving those who serve," said Trautman. "We will continue supporting our employees, maintaining open communication, working collaboratively with our City Council, and ensuring that we remain focused on providing exceptional service to the people who depend on us."

City operations and services will continue without interruption.

Airway Heights is a community that blends small-town charm with city energy, shaped by a vibrant and diverse population with deep talent and heart. Set against stunning views of Mount Spokane, with access to numerous parks and a growing mix of local businesses, the City continues to thrive as it cultivates new opportunities for residents and visitors alike.

Airway Heights is a safe and interconnected community that values a strong sense of belonging, maintaining its small-town character where neighbors are friendly, welcoming, and willing to help one another, while also embracing growth and change. As a place to raise a family, engage in community life, and create lasting memories, Airway Heights welcomes both long-time residents and newcomers.

This spirit guides the Airway Heights Comprehensive Plan 2026–2046, the City’s adopted policy document that establishes goals, policies, and guidance for how the community will grow and develop over the next twenty years. The plan sets a long-term vision for Airway Heights, informed by community input and grounded in local priorities.
