The Xi of South Carolina Chapter of Alpha Kappa Delta International Sociology Honor Society inducted five new members - Tiffany Carnell, Katelyn Lewis, Jewell Russell, Ry Wisham, and Alahni Wolford - during the annual Celebration of Sociology event on April 23, 2026. Dr. Ashaad Hipps, a 2018 graduate, delivered an inspiring keynote speech, crediting his professors' small gestures as motivation for his success. The Department of Sociology also recognized outstanding students, announced scholarship recipients, and bid farewell to graduating seniors. This ceremony showcased the department's commitment to student achievement and sociological excellence.

We had an amazing time co-hosting the “Careers in Criminal Justice Panel” with the USCA Chapter of ! Our panelists from SC Law Enforcement Division, Aiken Solicitors’ Office, SC Department of Juvenile Justice, and Aiken Department of Public Safety shared their expertise and inspired us with their career stories. Thanks to AKD for making it all possible with their funding!

Congratulations to Sophomore Sociology - Criminology/Criminal Justice Major, Baileigh Sweger, on her recent graduation from Citizen’s Academy! 🎊She completed the 9-week program that “gives participants an overall understanding of each unique aspect of Public Safety.” 📚🚓

Congratulations to Carol Wright for being awarded the first Undergraduate Library Research Award for creative use of library resources!!

Carol is minoring in Anthropology and Human Geography. In Dr. Westermeyer’s class, ANTH A325 Social Movements and Social Change, she used the university archives to research the textile workers strike at the Graniteville Mill in 1933. She will be presenting her work as a poster presentation at Scholar Showcase in April.

Sociological Trivia with Chapter of was a hit! One student said, “we should definitely do things like this more often!” Ask and you shall receive… Funding for this event was made possible by a Chapter Activity Grant from Alpha Kappa Delta International Sociology Honor Society. 🎊🎉

We hope to see y’all at our 3rd Annual 5K run to benefit The Sandy Rogers and Scotty Richardson Memorial Scholarship on campus on Saturday, February 21st. This year, the race uses a new course and starts at 8am. Link to register in bio!
