CAFE: Concerned Aikenites For Education

This page was created to present a united front against the practices and policies that have become a detriment to the learning environment in our schools.

The Aiken County School Board and Superintendent are supporting policies that are harmful the learning environment within Aiken County Schools. Some of these policies impair a teacher's ability to teach and limit the student's knowledge retention. This page was created to freely talk about the issues in our schools and address ways to correct them. This page will also serve as a voice for teachers

A short while ago, townhalls were held concerning the discipline policies the school district. We listened to the superintendent and board members tell us how this relaxed discipline agenda was beneficial to education, even though we had already started to see the negative impact and disruptions it caused in the classroms of our children. Now we see the long term results of these policies. A student shoving a teacher seated at her desk, but it doesn't stop there. This teacher then went to Assistant Principal Allen Burnham to seek help with the write up. One would expect this kind of incident to be taken seriously with some compassion shown for the teacher who was just working at her desk, but that is not what Mr. Burnham did. Instead he complained about the paperwork he would have to do and accused the teacher of blowing the incident out of proportion. I ask you when did it start being okay for students to place their hands on teachers? If a teacher did that to a student, the teacher would have been fired and the superintendent would have profusley apologized to the parents hoping to avoid a lawsuit. However it appears this administration, Mr. Burnham in particular, does not care about the teachers it employs as this is not the an isolated incident. There have been other instances involving teachers and Mr. Burnham, where he has either complained about having to do his job or begrudging helped them. Things will not change in our schools until we voice our frustrations. Call your board member, call the superintendant, call your children's principal let them know you do not consider this okay.
