Sorry I missed it!

Last year, I designed a high school chemistry course using the ADDIE instructional design framework and the 5E Instructional Model. Looking back, I realize how well those two frameworks complement one another.

🔹 ADDIE provides the blueprint for designing instruction.
🔹 The 5E Model brings that design to life through inquiry-based learning.

Together, they help create lessons that are intentional, engaging, and focused on student sensemaking rather than simply covering content.

As I continue building The BASELINE Inquiry & Design Lab, I'm revisiting instructional design frameworks and reflecting on how thoughtful instructional design can strengthen curriculum, assessment, and classroom instruction.

😮‍💨 TEACHERS SPEND THE ENTIRE SUMMER RECOVERING

Not vacationing.

Recovering.

Week one: sleeping more than she has in ten months.

Week two: remembering what it feels like to eat lunch at an actual lunch hour.

Week three: starting to feel like a person again.

Week four: beginning to dread August.

By July she is already anxious about the fall.

By the end of July she is back in the building setting up her classroom.

The summer is not a benefit.

The summer is the body's way of surviving a job that would break most people in three months if it ran year round.

And every August she goes back.

Because she still believes in it.

Because she still loves the kids.

Because leaving feels like giving up.

Until it doesn't anymore.

Until the recovery stops being enough and the dread starts earlier and the love starts running out.

That is not a character flaw.

That is a timeline.

Students don’t come into our classrooms empty.

They come with experiences, community knowledge, and real-world connections that should drive how we teach science.

At MosesSTEMinc L3C, we center funds of knowledge to support sensemaking, engagement, and equity in STEM.

This is how we shift from students memorizing science…
to students actually making sense of it. 🧪
