Learning to read music(after well established on the instrument or simultaneously in some cases); customized for student, ability, age etc. I begin any age violinist(those who hear pitches correctly and who can hum in tune-ages vary-usually not before age 3 or 4) with the fundamental importance of basic bow hold and proper posture which is strongly emphasized until 'mastered'...And we use the Suzuki repertoire and approach to learn the violin and flute....
I strongly prefer any beginner young violinist(probably age 9 or under) to have at least one parent learn alongside the child. The parent is the home teacher of violin to the child. This promotes highest success in correctly getting established on the violin from the onset of learning. I have successfully begun 7 homeschool parent/adult violinists from scratch(no pun intended)! in the past 2 years and they have been an absolute joy and inspiration to work with! And to watch parents learn a music instrument alongside their children is a true joy for that family and for all who get to witness them play together as a family...
I am equipped to successfully take violin students through Suzuki book 1 & 2. I can take flute students through book 4 at this point. Some people take a number of months to finish a book and many students take a year to finish book 1..it all depends on many factors...age, ability, parental involvement, practice time devoted, time spent listening to reference recordings and more...
For those not familiar with Dr. Suzuki's philosophy-- 'The mother tongue approach'--Jill's paraphrase... as a child in any culture learns language by hearing it first, so a child can learn to play a musical instrument by listening to the songs with great repetition, through the use of reference recordings. Only when a student has full control of the bow, posture and fundamentals of violin/strings playing, do we then begin to read music as we play. Everything is customized for each student and each family. Some children will learn to read music as they learn the violin, depending on their age but separate from playing the violin. I also like to work with individual families when there are special financial needs and I desire to make this a high quality, affordable experience that is a joy, a blessing, a ministry, where friendships are built and ultimately the whole experience is glorifying to the Lord as parents and children learn to play a musical instrument with skill and excellence unto the Lord...
