We are working people fighting for all of us who call rural and small town WA home.

Firelands formed in spring 2019 as an organization of working people with a fire in the belly. We are grocery workers, bus drivers, mill workers, nurses, loggers, cannery workers, cooks, parents and students. We are organizing in the small towns and rural communities we love and call home to win an economy that respects working families and the land.

Data show Medicaid cuts put 22 WA hospitals at risk of closure 05/07/2026

New data show Washington state has one of the highest proportions of hospitals facing closure due to cuts to Medicaid under the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act."

The analysis from the nonprofit Public Citizen found 22 hospitals in Washington are at heightened risk of closure due to the cuts, mostly in rural areas.

Chris Majors, director of marketing and public relations for Harbor Regional Health in Aberdeen, said the hospital is already considering closing some services, including labor and delivery. He called the plans to cut Medicaid a tragedy.

"You can't let this bill play out the way that it is," Majors contended. "It has to get changed. It will kill people. That's the reality. There will be people who cannot get the services they need in time to save their lives if this continues. This isn't just about making money."

Majors said about 80% of the patients Grays Harbor Hospital serves rely on Medicaid and Medicare. Under the new law, Medicaid will be cut by $1 trillion over the next 10 years, leaving 10 million Americans without access to the program, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.

Jeffrey Gustaveson, organizer for the nonprofit Firelands Workers United, said the Trump administration’s argument cuts to Medicaid will reduce waste and fraud is a distraction. He pointed out the funds from the cuts will go to the wealthiest people in the country.

"When families in Aberdeen and Pacific County have to drive more than an hour to go see the doctor when their kid's having an asthma attack, it's because a bunch of billionaires got themselves a tax break," Gustaveson asserted.

For more than a century, working people on the Harbor have been standing together to win a better life.

Back in 1912, thousands of immigrant timber workers in Hoquiam marched on strike to demand fair pay and an 8-hour workday.

They won their demands.

Today, Firelands is joining *millions* across the country to demand a nation that puts workers over billionaires. They might have the money, but we’ve got the numbers.

This International Workers Day, and every day, we’ve got each others’ backs. If you’re with us, will you share this post?

Meanwhile, the politicians in charge tell us we have to tighten our belts. It's time to unrig the rules and actually tax the ultra-wealthy.

//

These corporations paid $0 in federal income tax for 2025.

An enormous victory for rural working families! Together, we spoke up and fought hard for the Millionaires Tax—because it'll make the mega-millionaires pay more of their share while lowering taxes on working families and small businesses. And because it'll put billions of dollars each year towards our schools, rural hospitals, and affordable childcare.

We're looking forward to seeing the Governor sign this bill into law! Will you share this post to help us spread the word?

Working families rally in Olympia against cuts to public services 03/02/2026

Will state lawmakers balance the budget on the backs of us working families? Or will they tax the rich to fund programs like affordable childcare?

"Both the Washington state House and Senate are proposing cutting hundreds of millions of dollars from a child-care program for low-income families to balance the budget.

Sol Gonzalez, a single mother of three...was at the rally organized by Firelands Workers United. Gonzalez works with families of children with disabilities and said she and the families she works with rely on the subsidies to be able to go to work.

"I'm earning an income and still working extra hours so I can make necessities and what my daughters are needing, so it's going to be really devastating for my family and many other families in the state...it's not fair that the very rich are not paying what they are supposed to pay."

//

It’s time to pass the Millionaires Tax and fully fund our public schools.

Yesterday, working families from across WA came together in Olympia to tell state leaders: “When the super-rich rig the rules, we pay the price!"

We sounded the alarm about cuts to healthcare, childcare, schools, and other essential public programs—and urged lawmakers to pass the Millionaires Tax this year to help fill the gap and make the super-rich pay their share.

Some of the wealthiest corporations and human beings in world history are here in our state. Microsoft alone raked in $101 billion in profits last year, and their CEO took home $96 million.

With wealth like that in our state, why are working families once again facing the possibility of more cuts? Because, for decades, politicians in WA have let corporations and CEOs rig the rules to protect their profits—at our expense.

So we're speaking out and sharing our message with state leaders: we need you do more to make the ultra-rich pay their share in taxes and protect working families from devastating cuts.

//
