Save the Mothers Network A platform through which MPHL students, graduates and supporters of safe motherhood meetup and share

For seven years, Save the Mothers has been working in Uganda to bring about the societal change needed to reduce maternal mortality. Through our MPHL program (offered at Uganda Christian University) we have trained almost 200 East African leaders – from such diverse fields as politics, law, journalism, education and the faith community – regarding the causes and solutions to this problem. Members of our community go on to become influencers for positive social change, working to overcome maternal death. This page is a space to share experiences and stay updated on the news and events related to safe motherhood within East Africa.

A Salute to Service, From One Silent Force to Another✨
Dr. Jean Chamberlain Froese, founding member Save the Mothers, has completed her official role as Honorary Colonel, 31 Signal Regiment, Canadian Armed Forces. Dr Jean’s closing words stopped us: “we are most effective in our role when we serve others.” At Save the Mothers, that’s our daily call too. Through our Master of Public Health Leadership partnership with Uganda Christian University and Mother Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative and community engagements, our Champions are the “Signallers” of maternal health; keeping communication lines open, repairing gaps in care, and working behind the scenes so mothers and newborns survive and thrive.

Dr. Jean, your last official salute inspires our next one: a salute to every mother and newborn who deserves to thrive and survive.

Thank you for modeling leadership that lifts others. We salute you right back.

From to the Lab: UCU Tech Students Join Safe Motherhood. At on 24 April, 200+ delegates shared commitment for safe motherhood. Over 30 research and change projects for safe motherhood were shared. The message was clear: Safe motherhood is all of us. Today, this came alive. We were privileged to host students from UCU School of Computing, Engineering, Data Science & Robotics . Led by mentor Tonny Kisomose, they arrived with research interests directly aligned to gaps raised at :
✅ Digital tools for antenatal care
✅ Immunization tracking systems
✅ Support for teenage mothers
✅ Smart hospital waste management
Our Executive Director Dr. Mushin Nsubuga received the team and shared how their research is key in preventing maternal deaths. This is what comes after a conference: young innovators turning dialogue into code, data, and prototypes.

We look forward to working with these innovators as their research becomes real-world impact.

STM2026 was more than a conference: It was a call to action. On 24 April 2026, over 200 stakeholders convened at Uganda Christian University for the Save the Mothers Maternal & Child Health Conference under the theme: “Every Change Project Matters: Multidisciplinary Collaborations to Reach Every Woman, Every Newborn, Everywhere.”

With over 30 presentations, the conference showcased practical, real-world solutions transforming maternal and child health. From strengthened referral systems and community midwifery models to digital innovations, youth-focused antenatal care, inclusive menstrual health, and expanded immunization efforts: One thing was clear: impact is happening at every level.

The keynote address by Prof Jerome Kabakyenga emphasized the need for multisectoral collaboration, community-based approaches, and data-driven solutions to strengthen health systems.

The Guest of Honour, Hon Margaret Muhanga, reminded participants that policies alone are not enough - action is required, and that even small, community-level initiatives can drive national impact.

Hon. Beatrice Akello Akori is the Minister of State for Economic Monitoring in the Office of the President of Uganda joined the conference

Speakers reinforced a shared message:
Prof Aaron Mushengyezi highlighted that safe motherhood is not only a medical issue, but also a social and cultural responsibility.
Dr Mushin Nsubuga underscored that every Master of Public Health Leadership alumnus represents a change project making impact in communities.

A dynamic panel discussion further emphasized the importance of partnerships, co-creation, and the evolving role of universities in addressing community health challenges.

The conference closed with a moving candlelight tribute 🕯️honoring mothers and babies lost and renewing a shared commitment to act. Every change project matters. Every action saves lives.
