Every year since we launched the Lead Innovate Transform (LIT) Leadership Series, I have had the privilege of engaging in 12 conversations with 12 remarkable leaders. Each conversation is different. Each leader brings a unique story, shaped by experiences that are often complex, challenging, and deeply personal. Many of these conversations leave me reflecting on my own journey. More importantly, they remind me that leadership is a continuous process of listening and learning. I hope that the students who join these conversations are learning alongside me.
One of those regular participants over the years has been Robert Okello Oyugi, the outgoing Guild President at Clarke International University. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to sit down with Robert for a post-presidency conversation as part of our LIT Leadership Series. It was a chance to reflect on his leadership journey, the lessons he has learned, and the experiences that have shaped him along the way.
Robert is one of those individuals who naturally leaves a positive impression. He is articulate, respectful, engaging, and confident…and he is deeply grounded in his values.
Before we began the conversation, we took a few moments to make sure we were camera-ready. Robert kept checking the details; his tie, his CIU Guild shirt, his jacket, even his shoes. As I watched, what stood out was not vanity, but preparation and attention to detail. He approached our conversation with a level of seriousness and professionalism that suggested it was the most important thing on his schedule that day. It was a small moment, but one that revealed a great deal about his character.
I learned during our conversation that he spent much of his childhood in internally displaced persons’ camps in northern Uganda. Life was substantially disrupted and so was his learning. But life in the settlement also shaped much of who he is today. From those experiences, he developed a strong work ethic, resilience, and a habit of following through on commitments. Rather than allowing his circumstances to define him, he has used them as motivation to achieve his goals, serve others and contribute to his community.
Robert’s tenure as Guild President coincided with an important milestone in the history of Clarke International University, the attainment of our University Charter. He spoke about the pride this brought him and how it strengthened his confidence when engaging with student leaders both within CIU and beyond.
I asked Robert what one lesson he would carry forward from his time as Guild President. Without hesitation, he replied, “I think leaders should be quick to listen and slow to speak.”
It is a simple lesson, but perhaps one of the most important. In a world where everyone seems eager to be heard, there is great value in taking the time to listen. I know I could use a little more of that myself.

Yesterday, Clarke International University celebrated a historic and emotional milestone during the official handover from our 14th Guild Council, led by our first-ever chartered Guild President, Robert Okello Oyogi, to the incoming 15th Guild Cabinet under Mr. Khamis Alhaj Rabbi. Graced by Vice Chancellor Prof. Rose Clarke Nanyonga and senior management, the ceremony was a powerful testament to CIU’s core values of student empowerment, resilient leadership, and unity across all faculties. We thank the outgoing team for their service and sacrifices, and we welcome our new leaders as they champion the voices of our vibrant student body. The future of CIU is in excellent hands!

Yesterday was nothing short of inspiring as we had the distinct privilege of hosting Hon. MINSA KABANDA at Clarke International University for the historic graduation ceremony of the 12 Weeks 360 Training (Cohort 1). Hearing her remarkable journey from a social-enterprise nurse to a prominent political leader was a powerful reminder of the limitless potential within the nursing profession, leaving the graduands deeply motivated. Huge congratulations to our very first cohort—your dedication and growth inspire us all, and we cannot wait to watch you go out there and change the world!
