Leer Students‘Association in Universities & Higher Institutes in Uganda, would like to share a short story with public , especially students in Kampala about Kertut Tap’s journey from Kenya to Uganda.

This is an advisable story for students and the entire South Sudanese community. Please read it carefully and share it with the community.

Why Always Us?

Dear Fellow South Sudanese,

I traveled from Kampala to Nairobi by road to attend the handing-over wedding ceremony of my friend, Mr. Taker Gatluok Biel, and her partner, Nyakhan Chuong Juoi.

During this trip, I was deeply irritated by the poor treatment I received from immigration officers in neighboring countries.

First, let me highlight the required documents for any traveler,

1- Valid passport
2- Yellow Fever (vaccination card)

However, at the Uganda-Kenya border, an officer asked me for my national identity.
I reply politely ,I only had a copy of my national ID saved on my phone, which I showed to the officer.

The officer demanded that I pay $50 or equivalent.

Despite possessing the required travel documents and explaining that I'm a student visiting family, supported by my school identity , the officer refused to accept them or provide any explanation.

After a long argument, and after offering some cash, he finally stamped my documents.

A similar incident happened at Kenyan immigration, where I was also forced to pay.

On my return trip, the Kenyan exit process was smooth. However, at the Ugandan immigration department (entrance), the officer demanded I provide my national ID again.

When I showed it on my phone, the female immigration officer told me I was wasting her time and summoned me into her office.

She demanded money, which I paid , but her coworker, a Captain, rejected it and told me to retrieve the money from a small box where her colleague had thrown it.

The Captain forcefully pushed me out when I tried to explain my situation politely.
When I confronted him about his unprofessional behavior, he replied, "tit for tat"
suggesting that South Sudanese mistreat others justify this.

He threatened that I would be arrested/ detain until morning if I don't do as he ordered .

I then talked to a friend who added some money, which I gave, and he stamped my documents.
The officer said, "Tell your people in Juba not to mistreat Ugandans"

Dear beloved South Sudanese, although not all of us are aggressive or mistreat others, it is time to deploy professional and ethical workers in government departments.
These employees must act with integrity and professionalism to protect and uphold our country’s image both regionally and globally.
To students who often travel to visit their families, kindly carry your passport, original Yellow Fever card, and national ID to avoid being scammed.
