Karamoja Tumaini Network Karamoja Tumaini Network (KTN) is a visionary, Karamojong‑led non‑profit dedicated to transforming the lives of vulnerable children in Uganda.

Founded to end the phenomenon of street‑connected children from Karamoja region, KTN operates through a community‑owned, culturally authentic and innovative model. We are recognised by the NGO Bureau, Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and operational districts across Karamoja. Rooted in the principles of dignity, cultural authenticity and resilience, KTN’s mission is to restore hope—“tumaini” in Swahili language—to children who have been forced to leave their homes for the streets of Uganda’s cities. With 90 % of our staff and leadership drawn from the Karamojong community, our programmes are authentic, community‑driven and trusted by the families we serve. By empowering local leaders and working closely with government and partners, we are building a future where every Karamojong child can thrive in safety, culture and opportunity.

A child should not have to carry reintegration alone.

When a child comes home, the family may also need support — to rebuild trust, keep the child safe, manage pressure, return the child to school and stay connected to the community.

KTN does not blame families for hardship. We work from the belief that children are safer when caregivers, households and communities are supported too.

Safe return needs family strength, community care and follow-up.

Why do some children from Karamoja end up on urban streets?

There is no single reason. Families may face drought, poverty, school disruption, household pressure, protection gaps or people who exploit children’s vulnerability.

At KTN, we believe prevention must begin at home — with families, communities and local protection structures in Karamoja.

We speak about Karamoja with respect. Children and families are not stories of pity. They are people with dignity, culture, strength and futures worth protecting.

Bringing a child home is important. But it is not the end.

A child may return home and still need support to feel safe, return to school, rebuild family relationships and stay away from the pressures that pushed them toward the street in the first place.

That is why KTN does not stop at return.

Safe reintegration means listening to the child, checking the home situation, supporting the family, helping with school or skills, and keeping in touch after the child has gone home.

A homecoming should last. That takes time, care and follow-up.

SHIELD means six connected parts:

S — Safeguard: prevention in Karamoja.
H — Heal: trusted response with children in urban areas.
I — Integrate: safe reintegration pathways.
E — Empower: education, skills and caregiver support.
L — Lead: advocacy and shared standards.
D — Data: evidence and accountability.

Children need more than one moment of help. They need protection before the road, care on the street, safe return, school, family support and follow-up.

That is how KTN connects prevention, protection, reintegration, empowerment, advocacy and evidence.

Karamoja Tumaini Network is now here on Facebook.

KTN is a Karamojong-led child protection organisation working with children and families from Karamoja, especially children at risk of being pushed onto urban streets.

We walk with children from the communities they leave, through the difficult places they reach, and back toward safety, school, family and community.

Our work is about prevention, trusted outreach, safe return, education, family support, advocacy and follow-up that does not stop too early.

This page will share KTN updates, learning and ways to stand with Karamojong children and families — always with dignity and safeguarding first.
