We shared our model for building strong government partnerships in a policy toolkit created by Global School Leaders.
🌍 With practical strategies and insights tailored to organizations in the Global South, "How to Scale with Government" offers 30 tools and nine mindsets that will help scale interventions and strengthen education reforms.
Our Chief Operating Officer Maggie Appleton spoke to Kat Pattilo about how Educate! navigates the policy landscape.

YET is designed to shape young people into leaders, entrepreneurs and changemakers.
If you’re passionate about youth development, this training is for you!

The three-week course (March 4th-22nd, 2024) will:

Teachers coaching fellow teachers – Educate!’s teacher training model is based on peer support and collaboration. Much of the professional development takes place in school, rather than in training halls led by external trainers.
The training equips educators with the tools to transform the classroom into a dynamic learning experience.
At its core is the Skills Lab methodology, where students learn through real-life scenarios, interactive group work, and problem-solving.
Last year, our model officially reached every secondary school in Rwanda.
In partnership with the government, our goal to equip all Rwandan secondary students with employment skills and the ability to build dignified livelihoods is becoming a nationwide reality!
We’re also collaborating with the Tanzanian education authorities to bring this model to their country. 🙌🏾

🎉 Yesterday, to mark World Education Day, more than 320 youth celebrated completing our mentor induction training in Uganda. They’re set to collaborate with about 800 schools across the country, preparing secondary students for employment and entrepreneurship.
Educate!’s goal is to empower 120,000 new Ugandan youth with employment skills by 2025, integrating this learning directly into schools. Actively involving young people in the design and delivery of our learning experiences is key to our approach. Our mentors are at the forefront, providing the knowledge, skills, and support for young people to build livelihoods and create businesses.
The mentor training covers the curriculum and strategies for effectively delivering it, with an emphasis on leadership skills, public speaking, and entrepreneurship. The mentors also dive deeply into critical topics such as gender and climate change so they can share awareness with students.
Youth Mentor Esther says: “Educate! has built me to be a leader, I’ve gained confidence, public speaking and entrepreneurship skills. The sessions on proposal writing and climate change will help in my work as a climate activist and to encourage my scholars and my community to protect the environment. I also learnt how to make briquettes with charcoal dust and that is going to be my next business.”

“Before I joined Educate!, people in the community viewed me as a failure, but now, people call me Mzee (boss) because they know I can give them work.” – Ivan (25), Educate! Livelihood Bootcamp Graduate.
Meet Ivan, an inspirational young Ugandan, who is now on the road to entrepreneurial success despite being unable to complete his secondary education. 🚀
Applying bootcamp lessons about starting a business with minimal capital, Ivan began by selling homemade bricks. He reinvested his profits in multiple agribusinesses – including tree-planting – providing jobs to youth in the surrounding area and contributing to environmental sustainability.
Educate!’s livelihood bootcamp aims to prepare young people to learn, earn, and thrive in today’s economy. Through strategically designed lessons, we encourage youth like Ivan to create businesses that build on their passions, address local challenges, and leverage community resources.
Our trainers support them to prepare business plans and marketing strategies. By the end of the bootcamp, graduates can not only manage their businesses but also solve community challenges.

As the year winds down, we have some exciting news to share about an important milestone we’ve achieved in Rwanda!
Educate!’s two-year teacher training model in Rwanda is now reaching every secondary school across the country, supporting the curriculum, policy, and assessment reform that has taken place.
With the support of our government partners, this model will continue to impact generations of young people, reaching over 170,000 youth annually.

🧑🏿🏫 Teachers like Grace and Didace are critical in helping students gain vital skills to thrive in today’s labor market.
At Educate! we believe that empowering teachers is the cornerstone of a successful competency-based curriculum reform.
This week, our Teacher Training Program took place in Rwanda, focusing on the teachers who guide students in the crucial last three years of secondary school – a period when many are on the verge of entering the workforce.
Training equips teachers to nurture soft skills like communication, creativity, critical thinking, and teamwork.
Educate! Program Officers train Master Trainers like Grace and Didace who then spread the knowledge to fellow teachers at district and community levels. This cascade approach broadens our reach while allowing educators to empower peers.
🤝🏿 Since 2015, Educate! has been providing technical advice to the Rwandan government on the country’s competency-based curriculum reform, aimed at creating a new generation of entrepreneurs. Together, we can transform education in East Africa!

Did you know that across some African regions, only 1 in 20 rural girls complete secondary school?
Meet Rashimi (left), a remarkable young woman featured on the front cover of our 2022 Impact Report. Rashimi dropped out of school due to financial constraints but found transformation through our livelihood bootcamp in Uganda. 💪🏿
Through the skills she gained, Rashimi started her own business selling fruit salad and juice. Her sister, Aisha, also found success selling soya flour to combat malnutrition in their community.
Rashimi can now support her young son and contribute to her mother’s medical needs, all while saving for expansion. The sisters aim to generate enough profit to rent a storefront, purchase coolers for the juice, and offer more commodities to customers.
Our bootcamps primarily cater to rural girls but also include boys, delivering skill-building experiences through trained mentors. The bootcamps are hyper-tailored to unique needs - trainers translate lessons into local languages and adapt content to accommodate lower literacy and numeracy levels. Services like childcare are also offered so that young mothers can actively participate.

✨ Celebrating International Youth Day 2023! ✨
We're excited to be part of the action at the Kenya Cultural Centre, where early celebrations of International Youth Day which is tomorrow, are in full swing.
In line with this year's International Youth Day theme, 'Green Skills for Youth,' talented entrepreneurs are taking the spotlight, proudly showcasing the green and sustainable businesses they've developed.
Educate! is also celebrating our innovative SkillUp livelihoods bootcamps which bring fresh and creative approaches to involving young people, particularly young women in the agriculture sector, a powerhouse of the Kenyan economy.
