Another Milestone for the Mzuni Data Science Society! 🇲🇼🇳🇬

Today, we are proud to celebrate Memo Sinkhonde, a Data Science student at Mzuzu University, who is representing Malawi at the Deep Learning Indaba 2026, taking place from 2–7 August 2026 at Pan-Atlantic University in Lagos, Nigeria.

The Deep Learning Indaba is Africa's premier Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence gathering, bringing together over 1,000 participants from more than 45 African countries, including students, researchers, academics, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders. This year's theme, "Sovereign Intelligence. African Scale," highlights Africa's vision of building AI systems, research, and innovations that are developed by Africans, for Africa.

Throughout the week, Memo will participate in an exciting programme featuring:

🧠 World-class keynote presentations by leading AI researchers.
💻 Technical tutorials and hands-on practical sessions.
🤝 Workshops, mentorship, and networking opportunities.
📄 Research presentations showcasing cutting-edge African AI innovations.
🚀 Community discussions on the future of Artificial Intelligence across the continent.

The experience will expose her to the latest developments in Deep Learning, Machine Learning, Generative AI, AI research, and responsible AI, while connecting her with one of the largest and most vibrant AI communities in Africa.

Memo's participation is another testament to the growing impact of the Mzuni Data Science Society in preparing students to compete, collaborate, and contribute on the continental stage. We are proud to see another talented woman from our community representing Mzuzu University - Faculty of Science, Technology and Innovation and Malawi at one of Africa's most prestigious AI events.

Learning, Connecting, and Representing Malawi in Uganda 🇲🇼🇺🇬
Our member Fitina Sichali, a third-year Data Science student at Mzuzu University, is having an enriching experience at the Data Science Africa (DSA) Summer School & Workshop 2026 hosted at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda.

Over the past few days, Fitina has been engaging with leading researchers, AI practitioners, and fellow students from across Africa through keynote talks, research presentations, poster sessions, and panel discussions covering some of the most important developments in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.

Some of the key topics explored include:

This experience is providing valuable exposure to cutting-edge research while connecting her with Africa's growing AI community. The knowledge and networks she is building will contribute to strengthening Data Science and Artificial Intelligence innovation at Mzuzu University and in Malawi.

Our member Joseph Kapalamula, a final-year Data Science student at Mzuzu University , continues to make the most of his experience at the African Computer Vision Summer School (ACVSS) 2026 hosted at the Google AI Community Center in Accra, Ghana.

Over the past few days, Joseph has taken part in an intensive programme covering some of the most exciting areas of modern Artificial Intelligence and Computer Vision, including:

📌 Advanced Computer Vision Architectures
📌 Self-Supervised Learning
📌 Video Understanding

Beyond the lectures, he has participated in practical hands-on sessions, keynote presentations from internationally renowned AI researchers, mentorship sessions, and collaborative hackathon activities alongside talented students from across Africa.

Today, we are delighted to recognize the following members of Mzuni Data Science Society for their outstanding achievements. Joseph Kapalamula, a final-year Data Science Student, recently traveled to Accra, Ghana, to participate in the African Computer Vision Summer School 2026 at the Google AI center.

Additionally, Fitina Sichali, a third-year Data Science Student, has departed for Makerere University , Uganda to attend the Data Science Africa Summer School & Workshop.

Notably, Joseph is the first student from Mzuni Data Science Society to attend this particular event, while Fitina Sichali becomes the second student to participate in the Data Science Africa event, following Sibongile Malama's attendance in both 2024 and 2025.

We extend our best wishes to both Joseph and Fitina Sichali for their endeavors and inspire the rest of the community that opportunities for networking, learning, and representation are attainable.
