For girls living in the poorest regions in the world, school is their protection. With Covid-19 closing schools, girls are now more vulnerable than ever. More vulnerable to physical abuse, child marriage and teenage pregnancy. Help keep girls safe as we wait for schools to reopen.

"I USE A COTTON WOOL JACKET TO AVOID PERIOD SHAME"
Lydia wraps lumpy wool from jackets whenever she is on her monthly periods.
The 14-year-old cannot afford sanitary towels. She says she goes through a lot of psycho-social disturbance and stigma during her me**es. And now the cotton-wool jacket turned napkin, relieves her from embarrassment.
"I wrap it carefully and nobody can notice blood stains," she notes.
She fears asking her parents to buy her sanitary napkins because, in her community, matters such as menstruation and gender-based violence are not discussed in public.

Lydia regrets school closures due to Coronavirus. In school, she got free sanitary towels donated by the government to public schools across the country.
After schools closed, she was stranded, not knowing what to do when her periods came. She then settled on the jacket pieces to avoid 'embarrassment'.
Many girls are usually stigmatised. Traditional beliefs do not allow them to reveal what they are going through to their parents.Young girls have been engaging in risky behaviours including as transactional s*x to acquire sanitary pads. Poverty levels are high, and most girls and households find it increasingly difficult to afford the required sanitary napkins.
