Scientific name: Abrus Precatorius
English name: Rosary pea.
Medicinal uses:
1. Decoction of leaves are taken orally for cough
and flu.
2.The roots of Abrus precatorius herb are useful for the treatment of jaundice and bile haemoglobinuric.
3. Root paste is administered for the curation abdominal pains, recovery from tumors.
4. Grinded powder of roots of Abrus precatorius are taken with pure clarified butter thrice a day for four days to cure cough.
5. Root can be used as a remedy from snake bite by chewing.
6. For using as an anti-malarial and anticonvulsant the extract of fresh root in hot water can be administered orally on the other hand liquid broth of dried root is taken orally for the treatment of bronchitis and hepatitis.
7.Paste of leaves and seeds are applicable on head for graying of hair.
8. Dried seeds of Abrus precatorius are grinded to powder and administered orally one teaspoonful once a day to cure
the worm infestation for two days.
9.In veterinary section of medicine, dried seed powder of Abrus is used for the treatment of fractures.
10. Seeds also have some potential ingredients which are of good source of insecticide activity.
11. Dry form of seeds are administered orally as an aphrodisiac
12. Extract of seeds in hot water is taken orally for
malaria .
13. Dried seed powder are used by various African tribal groups as oral contraceptives.
14. Abrus seeds are also used to rid of tuberculosis and painful swellings.
15. Leaves of Abrus precatorius are squeezed with water and later the extract is used for washing the va**na to improve on va**nal sweetness.
DOSAGE:
The maximum dosage of Rosary pea seeds Powder should not exceed 250 mg per day. Rosary pea leaves and root powder dosage should not exceed 4 grams per day
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
Any part of rosary plant should not be used before and after surgery. It may cause bleeding and affect clotting time. All parts of rosary plant are not suitable for the following diseases:
Gastritis
Ulcer
Ulcerative colitis
Mouth ulcer
Vertigo
DRUG INTERACTIONS:
Abrus Precatorius can interact with various medicines including antiplatelet drugs, antihypertensive drugs, and antidiabetic medicines, so you should consult a physician before using any part of rosary plant with these drugs.
SIDE EFFECTS:
The seed of Abrus Precatorius is known to be extremely poisonous when taken without proper prescription. Its high toxic levels can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, tachycardia, coma, cold sweats and nausea. Prolonged use of Abrus can lead to anemia and can increase the white blood cell count tremendously. It is therefore best taken under professional guidance and avoided by pregnant women and infants.
However, roots and leaves contain a little amount of poisonous substance, but they can still cause poisoning.
