Ngoma Jam Sessions hosted their first Drum Circle Retreat this past weekend, on Saturday 4th May at the lush Farm , surrounded by plenty of sweet fruit trees and positive vibrations. We engaged in a Drum Lesson led by Nilotika Ensbamble drummer and Ba Cipher Kabaka MC & music producer, Niina MC Emmanule, who taught us about the basics of the drum techniques and broke down the complexities of cultural rhythms of Uganda such as Baksimba and Kadodi beat patterns.
We then broke off for lunch catered for by Rasta Kitchen, as well as a creative workshop hosted by a local pottery master. Creative activities that are impactful for our mental health that we can engage in with our hands, was our theme for the day.
Drum Master Ejuku led us in a creative jam session, that had us combing expressive dance and body movements to rhythm, and we ended the day with planting 4 trees, because we always talk about the issues of climate change yet how many of us are actually doing something about it ? After all, if we want more indigenous drums to be made, we need to be planting more trees !
Special thanks to all the beautiful souls who spent their weekend with us, and the team that ensured the day was a success !
