We are so happy to announce the extension of the next Top Business Idea competition of the year deadline to NOVEMBER 8TH, allowing more teachers, students, and their school business teams to participate with other teams around the world! In light of this, we would like to introduce you to Paul Mubiru, a dedicated teacher at Little Angels Nursery and Day Care School in Bweyogerere, Uganda.
In 2023, while searching online for ways to enhance his school’s curriculum, Paul discovered the School Enterprise Challenge. Teaching 5- and 6-year-olds meant that family and community support was crucial. He wrote a letter to parents explaining how the competition would teach valuable skills such as collaboration, communication, leadership, and problem solving.
The students came up with the idea of creating bottle banks by recycling plastic bottles into piggy banks to promote saving. The children enthusiastically collected around 150 bottles, excited to transform them into products to sell. Tragedy struck when someone broke into the school and stole all the bottles.
Devastated at the thought of telling his students, Paul gathered them together to explain what had happened. To his surprise, every student agreed to bring 10 bottles to school over the next week. The class collected more than 200 bottles, eventually earning $148 USD in profit.
As an Ambassador for the School Enterprise Challenge, Paul actively supports other schools in participating, significantly increasing his visibility. Paul’s elevated profile has led to significant recognition, including an Entrepreneurship Award at the second edition of the Trans Africa Investment Summit. In 2023, he also received the School Enterprise Challenge Inspirational Teacher Award.
In 2024, Paul is working with a new group of 22 students on a business called The Wise Eaters, focused on planting and selling vegetables.
Good luck to Paul and The Wise Eaters!
