If I was starting this business, I would just jump right into it and perhaps offer the first customer a little discount if he promised to give references to future prospective customers. If you wanted to get some experience first, maybe you could set up a very simple one sprinkler head system for yourself or for a friend.

Of course installing a new sprinkler system can be a lot work – and a lot of income for the irrigation service. You could do it all – both the installation and the service part of this business or you could just do one or the other. If it was me I would both!

I also pay him to check on the system during the months of operation to make sure it is operating properly and to see if any sprinkler heads, especially near the edge of the driveway or street, have become damaged. Then in the fall he comes by again to winterize the system which basically means shooting air through the system to get all the water out so the pipes won’t freeze during the winter.

Every spring my irrigation service – basically a one man band – comes over and turns on my sprinkler system. He charges a flat fee – I think it’s about $200. Then, there are add-on charges if he needs to replace any sprinkler heads.
