An effective English lesson: a checklist for students

📍 What was the aim of the lesson? What did you learn, and how does it relate to improving YOUR language skills?

📍 If there were any entertaining or interactive components (such as videos), how did they help you achieve the lesson's aim?

📍 Does the teacher only correct mistakes, or does he/she look for the root cause to fix the problem?

📍 Does the teacher only correct mistakes, or does he/she also introduce strategies for using the language?

📍 Does the teacher ask “Is it clear,” or does he/she also check for clarity with an open-ended question and another example?

Would you add anything else?

Language learners, do you consider yourselves to be optimists? 😊

Psycholinguistic research suggests that it’s true, as we project optimistic future situations where we’ll need a foreign language 💡

This, in turn, drives and energises us 💪

Synonyms no synonyms 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♂️
🍿= 🎬?

As a learner, you’ll benefit from being curious and analytic, particularly if you aim to upgrade your language level. You might be surprised to find out that some words we tend to use interchangeably (as synonyms) are loaded with interesting differences. Consider this:

🍿🎬Film and movie
“Film” has up-culture connotation, it attempts to convey something larger than itself. A movie is about giving the audience exactly what they want - easy answers.

👙🍑 Naked and n**e
“Naked” implies some embarrassment most of us feel in that condition, while “n**e” carries no uncomfortable overtone

🛋 🛏 Couch and sofa
“Couch” is a piece of furniture with no arms used for lying. “Sofa” is a long seat usually with arms and a back, usually convertible into a bed

🪨💎 Rock and stone
Stone is smaller than rock. Rock is made out of stone and mineral matter. Stones are non-metallic materials

Pick a short (1-3 min) video clip on Youtube and watch it following the steps:

1st time - for general understanding (subtitles off)

2nd time - watch again with subtitles on (to understand more details); you may want to take notes ✍️

3d time - subtitles off again (check what you can actually hear now)
