The University of Victoria was founded in 1851 as Owens College: the successful textile manufacturer John Owens bequeathed a large sum of money for its construction. In 1880, the college received a royal charter and became the first civilian educational institution in England. The most famous of all higher education institutions in Manchester is the University of Manchester, which preserves a rich scientific heritage. Among the graduates and employees of the university are 25 Nobel laureates. The university was created due to the merger of the University of Victoria and the Institute of Science and Technology.
