The city was founded by the Aztecs in 1325 under the name Tenochtitlan, which means "place of cactus rock". But since there were temples in this city in honor of the Aztec god of war Mehitli, the second name of the city was in progress - Mexico City (where co is the suffix of the place). It was this second name that was adopted by the Spanish conquerors after the final conquest of the city in the early 16th century. The Russian-language tradition is characterized by different spellings of the names of the country and its capital, in contrast to, for example, the Spanish-language.
