The prosperity of Bremen began in 845, during the reign of Archbishop Adalbert. In 859 the city was looted by Rurik of Jutland. In 1032 the first city walls were erected. In 1260 Bremen joined the Hanseatic League. Rapid economic development allowed Bremen to get out of the power of the archbishop and become a free city.
