Yekaterinburg City in Russia

The geographical position of Ekaterinburg is extremely favorable and over the course of history has had a positive impact on the development of the city. Yekaterinburg is located in the Middle Urals, where the mountains have a low altitude, which served as a favorable condition for the construction through Yekaterinburg of major highways from Central Russia to Siberia (Great Siberian Tract and, for some time, the Trans-Siberian Railway). As a result, Yekaterinburg was formed as a strategically important center of Russia, which still provides a link between the European and Asian parts of the country.

The city is located on the east coast of the Ural Mountains, on the banks of the river Iset, on which within the city there are 4 ponds - Upper Iset, City, Park and Lower Iset. Also within the city there are four natural lakes: in the east - Shartash and Maliy Shartash, in the northwest - Shuvakish, in the west - Zdohnya.

The tallest building and at the same time the northernmost skyscraper in the world is the Antey 3 complex.

An important industrial and scientific center. The city has 14 higher education institutions (including 2 universities and a conservatory), a film studio, an opera and ballet theater, and a puppet theater.

The city was founded in 1723. It is named after the retinue of Peter I Catherine (Russian: Екатерина). The population is about 1.483 million inhabitants.
