Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University gained another partner, as a memorandum of cooperation was signed with the Ukrainian Medical Center for Mother and Child Rehabilitation of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine from Odesa.

During the meeting with representatives of the Rehabilitation Center, the guests shared their vision of future cooperation. The colleagues from Odesa expressed interest in providing internships and practical training opportunities for LNMU students, especially future specialists in rehabilitation and mental health, at the Center’s departments. In addition, the discussion covered opportunities for medical graduates to complete the practical part of their internship training at the Center. The Center is the only state institution in southern Ukraine providing comprehensive medical care to both children and adults, including diagnostic and treatment services, rehabilitation, psychosocial support, and mental health services. Most services are provided free of charge within the framework of the Medical Guarantees Program of the National Health Service of Ukraine.

Paediatrics students successfully passed their practical exam

Final-year students are continuing to sit their final exams. In early May, sixth-year paediatrics students demonstrated their practical skills at the University’s simulation centre.

This year, the objective structured practical (clinical) exam comprises 12 stations. These cover disciplines in the fields of internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, and the practical application of mhGAP tools. All 23 students from Medical Faculty No. 2 passed them successfully.

As before, the focus of the exam was on a thorough assessment of practical skills. The prospective graduates demonstrated their ability to perform resuscitation procedures on children and adults using manikins and interacted with ‘standardised patients’. This approach allowed for the assessment not only of clinical reasoning but also of the future doctors’ communication skills during the taking of medical histories and the prescribing of treatment.

According to the chair of the examination board, Professor Olena Lychkovska, all paediatric graduates successfully completed the set tasks. This is an important step, as marks in the OSP(K)I directly influence graduates’ rankings and, consequently, their future placement for their internship.

Professor Lawrence M. Dubuske signed a cooperation agreement at the University and gave a lecture
The guest of Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University was the renowned American immunologist, allergist and pulmonologist, Dr Lawrence M. Dubuske – a Doctor of Medicine, Professor at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and George Washington University Hospital, and Director of the Institute for Research in Immunology and Neurology (IRINE). This is not the first time the renowned specialist has visited the University as a guest lecturer. Professor Dubuske’s grandparents were originally from the Lviv region. In their time, fleeing the fascist and communist invasions, they emigrated to the USA. Indeed, this is a major factor motivating him to support Ukrainians by assisting their professional development.

Today, this cooperation was formalised: the Rector of Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University, Professor Orest Chemerys, and Lawrence M. Dubuske, as Director of the Institute for Immunological Research of New England, signed a bilateral agreement.

Pharmacy students took part in Farmak’s forum

On 2 April, the PRO Future forum, organised by the pharmaceutical company Farmak, took place in Kyiv. The event brought together ambitious students, experts and industry practitioners to discuss the topical theme: ‘Transforming education in a changing world: how development and technology create new opportunities’. Such an event was not to be missed by students from the Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University. The Faculty of Pharmacy was well represented at the forum by fourth-year students.

Our students particularly noted the ‘inquisitive’ atmosphere of the forum, the substance of the presentations and the lively discussions. Undoubtedly, such events are a wonderful opportunity not only to learn about the latest technologies, but also to establish professional contacts.

The Faculty of Dentistry actively incorporates the latest technologies into its teaching
Dental education today is no longer just about textbooks and phantoms. It is about technology, precision and the feeling of being ‘in a real clinic’. With the support of the Dental Medical Centre, the Faculty of Dentistry team has taken a significant step forward by introducing 3D printing of jaw models made from photopolymer resin with removable permanent teeth.

The possibilities of 3D technology open up a new level of training: personalised learning, the ability to replicate clinical situations, and the potential to scale and continuously update the training resources.

In this way, it is not just knowledge that is developed — clinical thinking and precision of movement are cultivated, which will form the basis for high-quality patient care in the future.

And this is no longer the future. This is the present of our dental education.

Future doctors and physical therapists get acquainted with the work of a multidisciplinary team of rehabilitation specialists

When a patient takes his first step after an injury or serious illness, it is a small victory for a large team of specialists. That is why it is so important for students to know about the rehabilitation process not only from textbooks, but also to see it in real clinical practice.
In the rehabilitation department, students, together with a team of specialists, help patients return to active life every day. They have the opportunity to get acquainted with the organization of the work of a multidisciplinary team, the principles of interprofessional interaction and modern approaches to patient recovery. Future doctors and physical therapists feel the special value of such classes when they become witnesses of small but extremely important victories of patients. It is at such moments that they realize the true role of rehabilitation in modern medicine and the importance of teamwork in the recovery process.
