Easter Island: Chile
This isolated island, situated 2,200 miles off the western coast of Chile in the Pacific Ocean, is one of the most mysterious places on earth. Numerous theories have surfaced about its Polynesian settlers, the Rapa Nui, and the demise of their civilization. What survived on Easter Island are 900-plus moai statues (large, humanlike monoliths) spread across the island. The largest one, "El Gigante," measures more than 70 feet tall. Ahu Tongariki on the southeast coast is the largest ceremonial structure, featuring 15 moai statues side by side. This picturesque location overlooking Hanga Nui ("big bay") is one of the most recognizable images of Easter Island. Since there are limited flights to this destination, you'll want to plan your visit far in advance. You can also reach Easter Island via cruise ship on select itineraries.
