The vast majority of Yemenis are Muslims (99%). Just over half of Yemeni Muslims are Shafi'i Sunnis; there are supporters of other legal schools in the country - Hanifites and Malikites. A large Shiite community (8 to 10 million believers) is concentrated in Yemen; most of them are Zeidites.
Religious minorities are represented by Hindus (155 thousand), Christians (41 thousand), Jews, Zoroastrians and others.

The head of state is the president, elected (since 1999) by direct universal suffrage for 7 years. President Ali Abdullah Saleh has been elected to the post three times. However, due to the uprising and assassination attempt in 2011, he resigned early. In February 2012, Abd Rabbo Mansour Al-Hadi was elected President for a two-year term.

Northern Yemen gained independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1918.
On September 18, 1962, after the death of King Ahmed, Prince Muhammad al-Badr was proclaimed the new king. Taking advantage of the situation, on September 26, troops condemned the military coup, overthrew the theocratic monarchy, and proclaimed the Yemeni Arab Republic.

The population, according to the 2011 census, is more than 25 million people, the territory is 527,970 km. It ranks forty-seventh in the world in population and forty-ninth in area.
The capital is Sana'a.
The official language is Arabic.
