In 1586, the General States of the Dutch provinces, which rebelled against the Spanish invaders, gathered here. But, not surprisingly, despite the important events that took place here, The Hague received the status of a city only under Louis Bonaparte (who was installed on the Dutch throne by his brother Napoleon I). When the Oranges returned to power in the Netherlands, the city gained diplomatic status and became the venue for conferences in 1899, 1907, 1929 and 1930.

In the 14th century, Albert of Bavaria, the ruler of Holland, moved his court here; since then, the castle has become the official residence of the statgauder and the functions of the government are concentrated here.

The castle was expanded under his son - Floris V, at the same time with the residence and the territory of the settlement expanded.

Although The Hague has many names (with a special sound in almost all languages), its official name is' s-Gravenhage, but the Dutch are more willing to use the abbreviation Den Haag.
