Shymkent was founded in the XII century. Shymkent grew as a center of market trade between nomads and peasants. The city was destroyed several times: by Genghis Khan, the troops of the southern khanates and attacks by nomads. Later it was a part of the Kokand Khanate, in 1810 it became a part of the Emirate of Bukhara, in 1864 it was annexed to the Russian Empire. In 1914 the city was renamed Chernyaev, and in 1924 it was renamed Shymkent. After Kazakhstan gained independence in 1993, the city was renamed Shymkent as part of a government campaign to use Kazakh settlements.
