30 липня в Центрі лідерства захисників України Національний університет "Києво-Могилянська академія" відбулася чергова зустріч у межах Спільноти Дії – лекція «Туманний Альбіон: розвіюємо упередження та непорозуміння», присвячена особливостям британської культури, суспільства та комунікації.
Спікером став Олександр Краєв – директор програми «Північна Америка» в Раді зовнішньої політики «Українська Призма» Foreign Policy Council "Ukrainian Prism", старший викладач Kyiv-Mohyla IR Department / Кафедра міжнародних відносин НаУКМА, публіцист і колумніст українських та міжнародних видань.
Цього разу до зустрічі долучилися не лише випускники й випускниці Центру лідерства захисників України, а й учасники та учасниці програми ветеранського лідерства Рух ЧЕСНО. Ми радіємо таким можливостям об'єднувати ветеранські спільноти навколо важливих розмов і спільного навчання.
Під час зустрічі говорили про те, як британці сприймають себе та свою історію, чому стереотипи про Велику Британію часто заважають ефективній комунікації, як політична культура країни впливає на ухвалення рішень і чому розуміння британського контексту є важливим для співпраці з партнерами.
«За всіма красивими формами й смолтоками британці – великі прагматики».
Розуміння країни-партнера – це не питання ерудиції, а практична навичка. Знання історичного контексту, суспільних настроїв і логіки ухвалення рішень допомагає будувати довіру, точніше доносити українську позицію та вести розмову мовою, яку справді чують. Саме такі знання сьогодні стають важливою складовою міжнародного лідерства.

“The British support Ukraine not simply because they like us. It aligns with their national interests – just as it is in our national interest to build and maintain such a relationship,” said Oleksandr Kraiev.
On July 30, the Ukrainian Defenders Leadership Center hosted another event within its Community in Action initiative: The Foggy Albion: Debunking Misconceptions and Stereotypes, a lecture exploring British culture, society, and communication.
The speaker was Oleksandr Kraiev, Director of the North America Program at the Foreign Policy Council Ukrainian Prism, Senior Lecturer at the Department of International Relations at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, and a publicist and columnist for Ukrainian and international media.
This time, the event brought together not only graduates of the Ukrainian Defenders Leadership Center but also participants of the CHESNO Movement’s Veteran Leadership Program. We are grateful for opportunities like these to bring veteran communities together around meaningful conversations and shared learning.
During the session, participants discussed how the British perceive themselves and their history, why common stereotypes about the United Kingdom often hinder effective communication, how the country's political culture shapes decision-making, and why understanding the British context is essential for building strong partnerships.
“Behind all the polished manners and small talk, the British are great pragmatists.”
Understanding a partner country is not simply a matter of general knowledge – it is a practical skill. A solid grasp of historical context, public attitudes, and decision-making culture helps build trust, communicate Ukraine’s position more effectively, and engage in conversations that truly resonate. These are the kinds of competencies that have become an essential part of international leadership today.
