I get to spend time with some pretty courageous people whenever I’m running a Grief Recovery Method®️ group. They not only show courage in their willingness to discover new insights into themselves and their relationships, but in daring to take actions to complete the painful unfinished business that we all have with other human beings. It is inspiring!

Why do I feel so privileged to spend 2 hours a week for 8 weeks with a group like this?

I feel like I get to observe what I would never otherwise see, to learn valuable truths about people and relationships (and myself!) which otherwise would have remained obscured. I am allowed to watch human beings transform — even though they come from different cultures, different backgrounds, completely different upbringings, with different belief systems and sets of circumstances. I am allowed to be a witness, as they make personal, profound, life-changing discoveries about the impact that significant relationships have had on them. They each go away and do their own personal work. When they come to the group and share whatever it is they’ve chosen to share, I am shown repeatedly how powerful our spoken words are in one another’s lives — powerful to build up and strengthen, and powerful to tear down and destroy. I feel like I get the opportunity to see behind a curtain that would never have opened under ordinary circumstances, to reveal a treasure chest of wisdom and insight about — for instance — what kinds of socially and culturally acceptable behaviors hurt people; and what steps anyone can take to heal. I gain motivation and inspiration to keep walking this path myself, to continue to do my own hard work. For me as a Christian, though this is a secular program, I leave every session with my faith in God and the integrity of His word confirmed and deepened. My trust in God gets bigger. I see undeniable evidence of His presence and participation in human suffering (and ours in His).

Today I’m taking some time for myself to do some important personal work around my relationship with my father.

Coincidentally, yesterday was Father’s Day.

I turned 65 recently. My dad died when I was twelve. I have felt resolved and at peace about the fact that he died when I was so young, for decades.

AND — this also is true: I have been astounded by all the unfinished emotional business I have discovered in my own heart regarding my dad and how his early death has had a lifelong negative impact on me.

Feeling incredibly helped, guided, supported, relieved, grateful and lighter, as I complete this latest work with my dad.

I appreciate Kylie having me as a guest on her podcast today. She’s a life coach who has a particular passion for discovering ways to inspire moms with kids at home who find life overwhelming at times.

Anytime we wish something quite important to us could have been different, or better, or more, that’s a grief event.
