Shown here is Jutta Hempel, chess wonder child at the age of six, as she plays against 12 men at the Streichmuhle Chess Club. The German youngster won six games and finished the others with draws.
West Germany, 1966.
Jutta Hempel was born in Flensburg, Germany, in 1960.
At age 3, Jutta could watch a chess game and replay it by memory.
At age 4, she was playing chess at the town Youth Center.
By age 5, she was the top junior player in the town.
On her 6th birthday, she played 12 others is a simul and won 9.5-2.5 in four hours. In her next simul in the town square, she won 9-1.
At age 7, she won the Flensburg junior championship. She then played 6 games blindfolded simultaneously.
At age 8, she was performing even more simuls, some of which were broadcast on television.
At age 9, she won a problem-solving contest.
The last time she played was on 2 June 1979, at the Flensburg Lightning Tournament, in which she came first without losing a game.
That year she went on to further education in Kiel, in accordance with her own belief, ‘First study, find a profession and then perhaps start playing again’.
As she was interested in Business Studies she spent two and a half years as an employee in a Danish bank, after which she continued as a student in Kiel until the end of 1985.
In the New Year she started work at the Land Bank in Kiel.
On 6 June 1986 she married, and is now called Hempel-Nissen.
Today she says: ‘A woman cannot earn a living from chess. But if I have children I will teach them to play, because chess has been a great help to me with everything.’
