☀️ Why is August called “серпень” in Ukrainian?

Unlike many European languages, Ukrainian month names are closely connected to nature and the seasons.

The name серпень comes from the word серп — sickle.
August is traditionally the time of harvesting grain in Ukraine. For centuries, farmers used a серп (sickle) to reap wheat, rye, and other crops by hand. Because this was the peak of the harvest season, the month became known as серпень — the month of the sickle.

In Ukrainian, відпочивати is an imperfective verb, which means it’s used for habitual actions, routines, or actions in progress.
