Basel Location in Switzerland

In 1661, the oldest public art museum in the world was founded in the city. The museum's collection is now the largest and most important art collection in Switzerland.

The city arose on the site of the Roman fortress Basilea, built to protect the ancient Roman colony of Augusta-Raurica (currently August) in 15 BC. In 740, Basel became the seat of a bishop. In 1226, the first bridge across the Rhine was opened. In 1356, a large part of the city was destroyed during an earthquake.

The Rhine divides the city and its historic center into two parts: Greater Basel on the left bank and Lesser Basel on the right. In Greater Basel, a Romanesque-Gothic red sandstone cathedral rises above the Rhine, and a Late Gothic town hall is located on the Market Square.[6]
