It is on Rhodes that the only ancient Greek stadium that has survived to this day is located. You can see it with your own eyes in the city of Lindos.
At the end of May, four-spotted bear butterflies begin to flock in large numbers to the Rhodes valley of Petaludes. Millions of them fly here, and thanks to this, the Petaloudes Valley has become one of the most popular attractions of Rhodes.
Locals often claim that the legendary Hercules, aka Hercules, was the founder of the first city on the island. But this is hardly true - the semi-legendary Hercules was born in Thebes, on the Greek mainland, and he did not found any cities on Rhodes.
In total, there are 44 settlements here. The largest of them is the city of Rhodes, the capital of the island and the center of the community of the same name. About 50% of all inhabitants of the island live here.
In the past, Rhodes was under the control of the Turks for quite a long time. Nowadays, only ancient mosques that have survived to this day, as well as some local dishes that clearly came from Turkish cuisine, remind of this.
The word "Rhodes" from the Greek language is translated as "rose". There are really a lot of these flowers, but the locals call the Emerald Island. This name suits him even better, since about a third of the island's area is covered with green forests.
The crime rate here is near zero, like on all other Greek islands. Most Rhodesians don't even lock their doors when they leave the house, and cars are safely left with the keys in the ignition.
The length of the coastline of Rhodes is only slightly more than 250 km. But there are quite a few direct roads here, so even not the farthest trip can take some time.
The island is rightfully famous for its mild climate - in summer there is no suffocating heat, and in winter it usually does not come to cold. However, once a frost of -3 °C was recorded here.
The ancient Greeks were ahead of the rest of the world in many ways, and not only in matters of culture. So, in the Rhodes city of Kamiros, about 2.5 thousand years ago, a water pipe was built that supplied water to houses.

Rhodes airport is called "Diagoras". This is a reference to the Rhodesian athlete Diagoras, who won the Olympic Games of Ancient Greece several thousand years ago .
The area of Rhodes is just over 1401 km². For comparison, Moscow within the Moscow Ring Road covers an area of about 900 km², and the area of the independent state of Liechtenstein is 160 km².
About 120 thousand people live in Rhodes. About 120 times less than in Moscow, but the population density on the Greek island is much lower than in our capital.
Of all the islands belonging to Greece, Rhodes is the fourth largest. However, it has changed hands many times over its long history.
The local population is quite religious, most of the residents attend church regularly. As in Greece as a whole, the vast majority of Rhodians are Orthodox Christians.

Sometimes it is stated that the island of Rhodes is washed by the waters of the Aegean and Mediterranean seas, and sometimes the Libyan and Cretan seas are mentioned. It's just that the last two are parts of the Aegean and Mediterranean respectively, hence the confusion.
The largest city on the island bears the same name - Rhodes, and about half of all islanders live in it. It is interesting for many reasons, and its central part is fully recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, because it has ideally preserved historical buildings.
About 75% of the entire budget of Rhodes depends on tourism. The global pandemic that began in 2020 dealt a very serious blow to the local economy, as the tourist flow in this direction dried up.
Once it was here that the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Wonders of the Ancient World, stood. It was a gigantic statue in the local harbor, but, unfortunately, it was destroyed by a powerful earthquake.
Rhodes will certainly appeal to those who do not feel very well in cloudy weather. There are about 85% of sunny days here annually, that is, about 300 days out of 365 the sun shines here.
