“Why can’t I remember this word?!”
❗Ever stared at a word in English and thought:
“I’ve seen this before—why can’t I remember it now?”

You’re not alone. And no, it’s not a memory issue.
It’s not your fault. Here’s why 👇

We forget words.
Even in our native language.

Sometimes I picture the word in my head, I know exactly what I want to say—but the word just disappears.

Yet when it happens in English, we’re way harder on ourselves.
Because we expect more.
We think we should know it.
But learning doesn’t work like that.

🧠 Understanding a word ≠ knowing how to use it.
Just because you looked it up yesterday doesn’t mean you can use it today.

Think about your own language:

How many times did you see or hear a word before it became natural?

How many years did that take?

Learning takes time.
The words you want to say in English won’t come out automatically… until you’ve practiced them enough times that they can.

So be kind to yourself.
It’s not your memory.
Not your talent.
Not your discipline.

✨It’s about doing the right things with the right words.

Інколи на уроках учні кажуть, що вони – класні плити для приготування їжі 🤭 А все тому, що слова cook і cooker більш підступні, ніж здаються на перший погляд. Пояснюємо 👇

Цього разу англійська дає нам "лінивий" урок. Якщо знаєш переклад дієслова "готувати", то просто заміни TO на артикль A/THE для іменника:

🍪 to cook = готувати їжу;
🧑‍🍳 a/the cook = кухар.

✅ Am I a good cook? Hell yeah, I've cooked all the dishes from my favorite cooking show! – Чи хороший я кухар? Хай йому грець, так, я приготував усі страви з мого улюбленого кулінарного шоу!

А ось cookER – це прилад, на якому готують (плита чи мультиварка). Це слово частіше використовується в британській англійській, американський варіянт – a stove.

✅ This cooker was here before I was born, and it's still working! –

Наприклад, замість «I used this opportunity», ви використовуєте словосполучення «I embraced this opportunity» або «I took advantage of this opportunity».

✅ The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time – A unique and gripping mystery
https://vist.ly/3mvirbj

✅ Percy Jackson series – Fun and adventurous series
https://vist.ly/3mvirbn

✅ Ready Player One – A futuristic novel using modern, simple language filled with contemporary references (also has a movie adaptation)
https://vist.ly/3mvirbk

✅ Wonder by R. J. Palacio – A heartwarming story (also a great movie!) https://vist.ly/3mvirbm

А яку книгу англійською мовою ви б хотіли прочитати?

How to turn the words you hear in videos into words you CAN actually use in conversations?

During a recent AMA (Ask Me Anything) with one of my B2-level English students, he asked a fantastic question:

"When I watch YouTube videos, I understand almost all the words and can guess the meaning of new ones, but why can't I use them when I speak?"

✨ This is something so many learners struggle with—and it's totally normal! ✨

➡️ I explained that most of us have two types of vocabulary:

🔍 Passive Vocabulary: Words you recognize when you hear or read them.
🗣️ Active Vocabulary: Words you actually use in conversation or writing.

Most of us (including native speakers) have a much larger passive vocabulary than active one. Typically 3 to 10 times larger than active vocabulary.

But here’s the good news: You can turn that passive knowledge into active skills! Here’s how:

1️⃣ Apply to real life: After catching a new word or phrase, think if it fits your life conversations, think where you could use it (with whom, where, what would you say) and write it down.

2️⃣ Summarize: After watching a video or reading something, try summarizing what you’ve learned out loud or in writing. This forces you to use those new words right away, making them stick!

Now, I want to hear from you!

Is your busy schedule stopping you from speaking English confidently?

I know how important speaking is for becoming fluent, but fitting practice into your life can be tough, right? Traditional lessons often ask for a lot of time and focus, plus homework to do. This can make it hard to keep up.

You probably know I have a cat named Nelson, and he loves the same spot on the sofa that I do. Whenever I leave the sofa and then come back, he is already there.

I think he likes it because it has my scent or because there is a small dip in the sofa that makes it cozy to curl up in. This dip appeared because I sit there so often that I’ve made an impact.

When you do something regularly, you will definitely make an impact, whether it's what you want or not.

Here are some ways you can improve your English this week or month:

(1) Make a "minimalist-approach" plan to learn and practice English and do what you can. If you plan specific activities, you are more likely to do them. For example:

Mondays: reading or listening + take notes;
Wednesday: review notes + working with mistakes;
Saturday: speaking + feedback.

(2) Engage with people and content that are interesting to you. Subscribe to someone who writes in English about the things you like reading about, and interact with them.

For example, my favorite fantasy writer Robin Hobb (.hobb) writes about gardening, her pets, and chicken on her farm - and the posts are short and often funny.

Try to leave comments under such posts and you will feel more connected with English.

(3) Choose a phrase from my email you like, and try to use it to say something about yourself or someone you know (your boss, relative, neighbor etc).

For example, "a dip in (the surface)", "curl up", or "make an impact" - how can you use them in your life?

👋 How have you been learning and practicing English recently? Has it made an impact in your English?

🚨 Did you know that practicing speaking without feedback is like running on a treadmill and never moving forward? 🚨

Many people focus on speaking skills, but they often forget how crucial feedback is for real progress.

Speaking practice is great, but without feedback, you might not know if you’re making mistakes or if you sound natural.

Feedback is the key! Here’s why it matters:

Corrections help you spot mistakes so you can avoid them next time.

Recommendations give you tips on how to improve and make your speaking even better.

Praise keeps you motivated by reminding you of your strengths and how far you've come.

With regular feedback, your speech will become clearer and more confident. It’s essential for effective learning and seeing real results!

I’ve created a special speaking program just for you! You’ll get personalized feedback that highlights what you do well and where you can grow. This way, you can truly make the most of your speaking practice.

Are you ready to boost your spoken English with helpful feedback?

Don’t miss this chance to enhance your learning experience!

Join me in October to chat about food, eating, nutrition, and dining out. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it and see great improvements!
