Protopelicanus has been described from the Late Eocene sediments, which was originally classified as a pelican, but now its taxonomic status is uncertain (insertae sedis). The bird may belong to another family of pelicans, or to sulopods, or to bony teeth. The Miocene pelican Liptornis from Patagonia has the status of nomen dubium (of dubious authenticity), as its description was based on fragments that do not provide sufficient arguments for the identification of the bird.

The oldest fossil remains of pelicans were found in the Early Oligocene sediments of France (age - 30 million years). Even at this time, the shape and structure of their beaks did not differ from the beaks of modern pelicans. It is likely that the family originated in the Eocene, about 40 million years ago. The pelican Miopelecanus gracilis has been described from early Miocene sediments in France, but the species is most likely to belong to the genus Pelecanus.

The name Pelecanus was first officially used in 1758 by Carl Linnaeus in the 10th edition of Systema Naturae. Under this name, the taxonomist combined pelicans, frigates, catfish and cormorants [1]. The name comes from the ancient Greek word "pelekis" (Greek πέλεκυς), which means "ax", meaning the shape of a bird's beak [2].
