It is widely believed that the name Schipperke means "little captain" in Flemish, and dogs of this breed were used in Belgium to guard merchant ships and barges. It probably originated in English-speaking countries in the 1880s due to the confusion between the Belgian shipperke and the keshond, also called the Dutch barge dog.

The first shipperke exhibition took place in 1882 in the city of Spa. The breed became fashionable thanks to the Queen of Belgium Maria Henriette. It was imported to the United States and Great Britain in 1887. In 1888 a breeding club was founded and the first breed standard was approved. The Shipperke Club became the first tribal club in Belgium. At that time, the types of dogs from Antwerp, Leuven and Brussels were different and significant efforts were made to unify the breed [2].

The common ancestor of the Belgian Shepherd and the Shipper was probably an ancient breed of small black dogs called the Leuvenaar. The history of shipperke begins in the 17th century. In the 1690s, the Shipper was a favorite dog of workers and shoemakers in the Saint-Germain district of Brussels. They competed with each other, adorning their dogs with intricate copper collars. The tails were completely docked, probably as it has been accepted since the 15th century. The breed was known as a hunter of mice, rats, moles and other pests.

In Flemish, the word schipperke means "little boatman" [3], according to other sources - "shepherd" [4]. According to the Belgian cynologist Florimond Verbank, schipperke is a modified schepperke, meaning "little shepherd" in the old Brabant dialect [3], and this view is supported by cynologist Jean-Marie Vanbutselle [5]. In Russian it is pronounced as "shipperke" with an emphasis on the first syllable [6].

Her head is wedge-shaped with a well-developed skull and a rather short snout. The body is well balanced, short, quite broad and stocky. Shipperka has a characteristic coat: very thick and stiff, it forms a collar, mane, toad and pants, which gives its contour uniqueness [2].
