The neck is short. The limbs are short and have five fingers. The hands are constantly directed outwards. Females have three or four pairs of mammary glands. The length of the head and body is 63-215 mm, and the tail is about 15-215 mm. Desmana is the largest member of the family, Scaptonyx the smallest. The eyes are small, hidden or almost hidden in the fur, and in some cases covered with skin. Despite some reports to the contrary, there is no outer ear, only a tiny hole open on the surface and not visible through the thick fur.

In Ukraine, the family is represented by two genera (one species in each) - mole (Talpa) and tuft (Desmana).
