The word hawk goes back to the Proto-Slavic form *astrębъ, formed from the root *astr- with the suffix -ęb- (connected by ablaut alternation with Proto-Slavic *-ǫb-, as in the word dove). The etymology of the part *astr- is not exactly clarified, it is usually associated[1] with the i.-e. *ōk̑ros "sharp", "sharp", "fast", cf. Eastern education in Latin accipiter "bird of prey", "hawk" < *acupeter, lit. "fast-winged" (cf. Greek ὠκυπέτης "fast-flying", Dr.-Ind. āçupátvan- the same)[2].
