Today is International Youth Day, a day to celebrate the resilience, ambition, and potential of young people around the world. This year's theme,"Different Contexts, Common Aspirations," reminds us that while young people face different realities, they share the same hopes for opportunity, skills, and a brighter future.
Monica's story is one example of how access to education and skills training can help turn those aspirations into reality. Unable to continue her education after primary school, Monica spent her days helping on her family's farm, uncertain about her future. Her journey took a new direction when she enrolled at Bigwa Folk Development College through 's Empowerment through Skills Program, funded by the Government of Canada.
Through this partnership, Monica gained access to training and opportunities that helped her build a path toward employment. Working with Bigwa Folk Development College, Canadian partners and helped strengthen technical and vocational training programs, ensuring young women like Monica develop skills that meet labour market needs. Through the programme, she gained practical cookery skills and hands-on industry experience that opened the door to employment. Today, Monica is employed in a hotel cookery department, earning an income and helping support her family.
Monica's story is a powerful example of this year's theme in action. Her aspirations are shared by millions of young people around the world: the opportunity to learn, work, and build a better future. ๐
