We are working towards St John’s University of Tanzania increasingly becoming a distinguished Christian university of global standards, being a source of benchmarks in identified niche fields in its core functions of teaching, research and innovation, and community engagement. By 2025 we envision a University with 12,000-15,000 students at the Chief Mazengo Campus, operating with a sound, stable and sustainable financial position. We envision St Mark’s Centre, Msalato Centre, and Kigoma/Ujiji Centre to be well established in terms of academic programmes, infrastructure, structure, financial position, and capacity to add significant value to the St John’s University system. St John’s University of Tanzania is committed to providing high quality and relevant education as well as undertaking research and consultancy activities, the aim of which is to support and respond to the needs of its stakeholders and to generate knowledge. Owned by the Anglican Church of Tanzania, SJUT was established in September, 2007 and incorporated under a charter prescribed by the Tanzania Universities Act of 2005 and as amended. The University is a strategic vehicle for the church’s unique contribution to society. The Anglican Church of Tanzania has always considered the provision of good education as an essential form and means of witnessing to the love of God to humankind and of spreading the gospel of peace. On the 10th September 2007 more than 800 students commenced studies at SJUT, pursuing undergraduate degrees in education, nursing, pharmacy, and business administration in several specializations. From this humble but promising beginning, in 10 short years, SJUT has not only grown significantly in student enrolment and academic programmes but is also poised to continue to grow. The University is strategically contributing to meeting critical needs in Tanzania and beyond. This is because there are simply too few university places in Tanzania for the large number of Tanzanians who qualify for university entrance every year. SJUT is already contributing to meeting this critical need. Our Vision and Mission Statements have been reviewed to better reflect who we are and what we intend to do towards fulfilling the objectives of the University under our Charter and meeting the varying needs of the stakeholders of the University. The plan is a dynamic living document such that even during its implementation certain aspects will be reviewed and updated as need arises to ensure that the University performs and measures its progress towards the set targets. MISSION: To provide and maintain high quality teaching and learning in disciplines essential for socio-economic development and transformation; to undertake research, innovation and consultancy; and to engage with the community within which we serve.
