"When an idea is powerful enough, it can foster unity and create a community."
YK has always been a hub of hidden talents; here, you'll find humble, talented, kind-hearted individuals with rich life stories. Especially in our language courses, we often encounter students who leave us amazed and full of admiration. We are truly honored that we can attract such talents to YK.
In the current challenging international landscape for the Russian language, yesterday's gathering was indeed a rare occasion. Compared to the external circumstances, the gathering was strangely filled with laughter, peace, and wisdom.
During the impromptu lecture series, we invited our students to share their precious personal experiences, including:
• Their experiences in recent years dealing with the challenges posed by the pandemic and conflicts.
• The difficulties they've encountered in their work.
• The meaningful exchanges that have occurred when interacting with different cultures.
• Their experiences of learning Russian in Germany and Latvia, as well as how they've used the Russian language locally.
Listening to their stories, you could sense that the so-called "Russian-speaking community" is much larger and more diverse than one might imagine, brimming with opportunities for expansion and diversity.
Looking at the students who participated yesterday, we had this feeling for a moment - "When an idea is powerful enough, it can foster unity and create a community." Throughout our language courses and activities, we've consistently held a powerful central idea: "Break stereotypes and get to know each unique culture." We may have said it many times, but it's worth repeating. Russia is vast, and beyond the stereotypical images of tanks and stern-faced individuals, there are many different facets. People who learn Russian can be filled with love, peace, a passion for the arts, a willingness to embrace different cultures, and a spirit of inclusivity. Language has always been a neutral medium.
We understand that embracing this idea is not easy, but we hope that one day, we can move beyond judging people solely based on their place of birth and nationality.
Thanks to all the classmates who took the time to come back and attend the gathering yesterday. A special thanks to the 4 students who prepared the impromptu lecture with dedication. Also, gratitude to those students who always provide us with endless encouragement after the event! Looking forward to seeing you all again next time!
By the way, the most shocking news from yesterday: The Russian department at Tamkang University is going to disappear, which is truly surprising and sad.

The heating pipes, pigeons often sit on them to keep warm.
Regarding the Russian custom of sitting for a while: Twice when I was about to leave Russia and return to Taiwan, my local friends would say, "подсидим" (let's sit for a while)! Everyone would then look at each other, not saying a word, sitting quietly together for a while before continuing their journey. It's a beautiful and heartwarming way to say goodbye.

"Venturing into Siberia - Siberian Grandmothers"
Before I set out, I brought a bottle of whiskey as a gift, but it turned out that none of the people I met along the way had a habit of drinking alcohol. In the end, I gave it to a friend's grandmother. I ate bread with her and listened to her share the cruelty of the war during her youth. In those days when they could only eat a small piece of bread to fill their stomachs, she endured so much hardship to get through.
The grandmothers I met in Russia were all warm and talkative. For example, on the long-distance bus to Yekaterinburg, the grandmother sitting next to me chatted with me the whole way. She shared her chocolate with me, and I, like a curious child, asked her to explain the scenery outside to me. When we saw a statue of Lenin, I asked her, "Who is this?"
"To me, Lenin is a very great man who saved the country, saved an entire generation, and also saved my world," she replied.

"Venturing into Siberia - The Taxi Uncle Who Taught Me to Erase Prejudices"
After a few days in Krasnoyarsk with barely a single kopek in my pocket, I stood hesitating in front of a foreign exchange booth. A taxi uncle nearby couldn't bear to watch any longer and intervened. He grabbed me and took me to the front of the line, boldly declaring, "There's a foreigner who needs to exchange money. Let's help him out, everyone!"
As I was about to leave after exchanging my money, I caught a glimpse of him holding a book by the door. Just as I secretly worried that he might try to sell me something, he said to me, "Someone left a dictionary in my car, and I have no use for it. It's a shame, so I'm giving it to you!"
